The Non Sense of Bingo in Alabama
Posted on March 22, 2010 by John Thomson
In fighting this bingo debate in the state of Alabama you would be surprised just how much money has been spent. The money they are spending on this issue could easily be used in so many other ways. Other ways that would benefit a lot more people too. Past the 15 months that this debate and the Task Force has been run there has been over 500,000 dollars spent; half a million dollars in focusing on fighting illegal gambling? Yet racing is allowed in this state, in the form of horse and greyhounds? The line between legal and illegal seems to be very tainted, and extremely expensive in defending. The cost come from running the task force and paying the people who have helped with the set up and legal purposes of this whole set up.
See back in December 2008 when Riley set up the force he also had to hire some legal assistance. This would be in the form of two attorneys, Michael Pennington and Matt Lembke. The firm that they come from is Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, LLP out of Birmingham. For the payment to the company it was a total of $536,115 that was made. Though at first it was supposed to be around $250,000, for some reason it was increased later on to $650,000. Now personally this seems like spending that could easily be used in so many other ways. Doesn’t it seem that someone is getting rich over the whole issue? Instead of having jobs available for those people who need the money, more money is going into pockets of people who don’t need it. An amount that is spent to fight something that could easily help to pay many county and city refurbishments and so much more; instead it is going into the pockets of attorneys. Someone make this nonsense end soon!
